100th Gulf Palio
The La Spezia Gulf Palio turns 100 years old and is preparing to celebrate this important milestone with an extraordinary edition full of events and excitement. The event, which has its roots in local seafaring culture, will take place as usual on the first Sunday in August, specifically on August 3, 2025.
A century of history and passion
Established in 1925, the Palio del Golfo is a rowing race involving the 13 maritime boroughs bordering the Gulf of La Spezia: Porto Venere, Le Grazie, Fezzano, Cadimare, Marola, La Spezia Centro, Canaletto, Fossamastra, Muggiano, San Terenzo, Venere Azzurra, Lerici and Tellaro. Each township participates with its own boat, handcrafted according to tradition, and with crews composed of experienced rowers.
The centennial program
The celebrations will begin on Friday, August 1, with the traditional night parade of the townships, which will start from Brin Square and end in Europe Square, accompanied by the ceremony of handing back the Stakes.
On Saturday, Aug. 2, Largo Fiorillo will host the weigh-in and boat inspection, followed by thedisplay of vintage cars on Chiodo Street and the township dinner on Corso Cavour.
On Sunday, August 3, the highlight of the event, the program includes:
- 5:00 p.m.: Junior category race
- 6:00 p.m.: Women’s category competition
- 6:25 p.m.: Airdrop with free-fall technique by Comsubin’s Incursion Operations Group
- 6:45 p.m.: Boat parade
- 7 p.m.: Commemoration of the fallen at sea
- 7:25 p.m.: Solemn opening of the rowing challenge between the townships
- 7:30 p.m.: 100th Gulf Palio
- 10:30 p.m.: Fireworks show
Finally, on Monday, Aug. 4, at 9 p.m. in Europe Square, the Palio and parade award ceremonies will be held.
