CAMeC, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

La Spezia (SP)

A journey between past and present

CAMeC, La Spezia’s Modern and Contemporary Art Centre, was established in the early 2000s to house and enhance the city’s collections in dialogue with the most significant 20th-century and contemporary artistic research. Located in a historic building that has seen the birth of schools and city courts, the museum is now a place where memory intertwines with the artists’ experiments, giving visitors an itinerary in which each work becomes a testimony to different eras and languages.

Time and location

The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and is closed on Mondays and 25 December; on the first Friday of each month, the opening hours are extended until 10 p.m. Located in Piazza Cesare Battisti, a few steps away from the pedestrian heart of the city, the CAMeC is easily accessible both on foot and by public transport.

Collections and Exhibitions

Permanent collections and temporary exhibitions coexist at the CAMeC, regularly alternating, offering an overview of the evolution of modern and contemporary art. The works conserved tell the story of the Gulf Prize and the donations that have enriched the civic heritage, while the exhibitions hosted allow us to discover new trends and unprecedented portraits of the current art scene.

A cultural experience

Visiting CAMeC means immersing oneself in an atmosphere of confrontation and participation: the spaces, designed to welcome the public in an informal way, lend themselves to moments of reflection but also direct dialogue with artists and curators. Workshops, meetings and guided tours complement the exhibition offer, transforming each day into an opportunity to deepen one’s view of art.
