Fish market
A historical and lively setting
Piazza Cavour, the beating heart of La Spezia, hosts a fish market from early in the morning that has its roots in the second half of the 19th century. An elegant wrought-iron roof protects the stalls, creating a setting that combines the charm of tradition with an atmosphere of everyday conviviality. Each stall tells the story of a family of fishmongers who, from generation to generation, keep alive a deep connection with the sea and the city.
Hours and accessibility
The market is open from Monday to Saturday, from 7.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m., and can be easily reached on foot from the railway station or by city bus lines. The morning hours make it possible to find the fresh catch of the day: already in the early hours, the boats return to port and the ice chests come alive with sea bream, sea bass, redfish and seafood directly from the Golfo dei Poeti.
Fish and local specialities
Among the stalls you will find an assortment of local seafood products: from the catch of the day to the most sought-after seafood, all accompanied by aromas and flavours typical of the Riviera. Fresh herbs, seasonal citrus fruits and warm focaccia complete the experience, offering ideas for simple but characterful dishes. Cleaning and basic preparation are often done on the spot, making it easy for you to leave home with everything you need.
An experience to be lived
Leaving the stalls with a reusable “sporta” laden with scents and colours means taking home not only quality ingredients, but a piece of local culture. Here one does not only buy fish, but savours the interweaving of stories, traditions and gastronomic advice passed on by those who make their living from the sea. An invitation to experience authentic La Spezia, where every purchase becomes a gesture of participation in the rhythm of the city.
